Philip Barlow has produced an excellent study on the history of "The Bible" in the Mormon Church. Beginning with Joseph Smith's study from the family Bible, Barlow traces the Mormon attitude towards the scripture through the decades. He discusses how it was used in establishing or clarifying doctrine, as well as in proselyting. He also covers the history of Joseph Smith's translation/revision of the Bible. Most LDS know that the King James Version of the Bible is the "official" Bible for all LDS meetings and publications, but the story of how this came to be isn't as clear as one might expect. It turns out many LDS leaders and scholars have acknowledged the weaknesses of the KJV, and the strengths of other translations that have been published over the years. It was only by the insistence of a few key 20th-century LDS leaders that the KJV was chosen as the sole resource for LDS study. The story of how that happened is told in this book as well.
