This is a very informative and detailed history and analysis of women's role in the National Park Service. Although the employment statistics are a bit outdated now, Kaufman's exhaustive account gives a clear picture of the evolution of equity within the NPS. Kaufman gives a survey of the entire history and the role women have played in the preservation and conservation of sites, including the work it took to have the sites protected by the NPS. The book covers every related subject and makes mention, either in the text or detailed notes, of hundreds of women. Kaufman also details the pains taken to acknowledge and preserve women's proper place in history, as evidenced by the designation of National Historic Sites, and makes clear that continued work is necessary in order to both expand the historical record to include more women and minorities, and preserve and protect the sites already designated. The threat is ever present, especially given current events, and the current trump administration's attempt to rape and pillage our National Parks with the help of rank and file gop members of Congress. This is written in a dry, academic manner. The author's focus was an accurate conveyance of as much information as possible. Consequently, I do not recommend this book for the casual reader with a passing interest, but rather for someone with a serious interest in the subject matter. That being said, there are many interesting facts and history about some of our National Parks and Landmarks, and how they came to become designated as such. Many dedicated people have fought hard for them and to save these important places from greed, exploitation, neglect, and disregard. This book is worth the effort of reading.

This book showed me that women have been fighting for our national parks since the beginning, and I am so proud I chose this agency so that I may continue the fight.
