Review # 1 was written on 2008-05-06 00:00:00 Gian Edwards The nature of this book means that some of it was really very good, with some contributions less so. Technically, I should tell you which were which. But I can't I can't remember. I read this a while back, like in May. It's now August. But I was in danger of forgetting that I'd read it, and I really wanted to remember that I read it because so much of it is so deeply personal for the writers. They offer such a range of perspectives, from the academic to one in particular writing from prison. All gay. All black. All chipping at the mythical monolith of opinion that people assume might exist within such a group. So, there it is. I remember this book, and I'm glad I had it. Glad I read it. Duly noted.

Review # 2 was written on 2012-10-17 00:00:00 Mariette Deveau This one left me with mixed feelings. Daniel Harris offers up some hilarious anecdotes about his year in drag--his quest for a wig is side-stitchingly funny--as well as some incredibly astute insights into what goes on between our ears regarding what we do betweeen the sheets. At the same time, the underlying story is a rather sad and depressing account of a man confronting the remorseless advance of time, the realization that his life has not exactly lived up to his own expectations, and a crushing sense of lonliness which he attempts to stave off through a series of one-night stands. Diary of a Drag Queen definitely has it's moments, but it's not something to pick up if you're looking for a light-hearted read--it's too dark for that.
