Review # 1 was written on 2012-09-14 00:00:00 Jay Martin The author suggests that many conventionally "Christian" values are actually the result of slow, steady injection of Roman beliefs into the religion. According to the author, after the Roman empire adopted (co-opted) Christianity, the threat of violence against people identifying as Christian lost much of its power, leaving a need for new control mechanisms. A big thesis of the book is that, over centuries, Roman sexual and family values were recast in "Christian" terms, and fulfilled this need for those in power. |
