Review # 1 was written on 2016-09-25 00:00:00 David Murphy This was a fun little book I had no intention of reading. I opened my library app and it said "It's Utah's birthday! Why don't you read a book about Utah?" I thought, "Why not?" This was the only book available, so lucky me. This was an anthology of pieces from a Utah historical society journal that were about sports. Baseball, boxing, speed records on the Salt Flats, skiing, sledding, and fishing are the ones that stood out to me. Some were essays, others memoirs. A couple were out-right researched papers. All were fairly interesting, but the ones that stood out to me the most were ones that were about places where I'd lived in Utah. Northern Cache Valley and baseball, for example, was fun to read because though it is mostly died out, there are residual traditions and games that still occur. Our town of Trenton has a homerun derby every 24th of July. Pleasant Grove was another place that we'd lived. The sledding hill they described was just a few blocks from our house. By my estimation it may have been over a mile long from the way they described it. It truly would have been a magnificent hill to sled down. Now it is a long fairly wide street that is used to channel water when there is a fast melt in the spring.
