This is a set of three works, each a non-fictional account and kind of autobiography by the artist Eddie Campbell. While I enjoyed very much the last bit - The Dance of Lifey Death (a series of vignettes that muse on the wonders of children, Campbell's love of wine and an eccentric friend in a particulary humorous anecdote and of course, life, death, and what happens inbetween. The first bit, Graffiti Kitchen is well played, a foolish piece about how the author found himself sleeping with both a mother and a daughter. The author continually chastises himself for that past behavior by referring to himself as a beast, a kind of extremely macho speciman of manhood that had to have it all despite the consequences. I love the word he utilizes: garooga - the call of beast man led by his penis. The middle part is Little Italy, a series of shorts in various artistic styles musing on his new life, married and a father in Australia, far from his haunts as Alec MacGarry.

This is really three books in one, arguably averaging out to 5 stars. "Graffiti Kitchen" gets 6 stars; it's one of the best things I've ever read, a stone classic. Drool. Seriously. "Little Italy" is pretty lightweight for the most part, but intentionally so. Maybe 3.5 stars. The eponymous story stuck in the middle is perhaps the best part. "Dance of Life Death" is a solid 4 stars, reading in many ways like a prequel to "After the Snooter" (which is probably better, not to say "Lifey Death" isn't great). It's very episodic, for better or worse, but also utterly smart and charming. And features some of the best use of zip-o-tone I've ever seen. Campbell was really magic with the stuff at this point.
