I found this lying around on a coat rack at church. I enjoyed the selection of C.S. Lewis quotes that seem to reflect particularly Mormon ways of looking at Christianity. I don't feel that Jensen added much in his commentary on these quotes-- the connections to LDS doctrine were obvious from the quotations themselves. The interesting question is why C.S. Lewis's take on Christianity is similar to LDS thought in so many particulars: apotheosis especially, but also the nature of the afterlife and spirits, the role of Satan, the importance of a personal relationship with God, and so on. For Jensen, the answer is obvious: as a righteous seeker after truth, the Holy Spirit directed Lewis to true doctrines. The problem with this notion is, of course, the contrapositive-- that anyone whose reasoning does not bring them to the same doctrinal understanding as Mormons must not be a righteous seeker of truth. Because the author was satisfied with his answer, he didn't dig any deeper to understand, for example, what early Christian or contemporary authors Lewis had been reading that had influenced his views on (for example) the process of becoming perfect in the afterlife. And it kept him from mentioning the various important ways Lewis differs from LDS belief-- most notably his notion of the Trinity. Anyway, if you want to pick it up I would recommend just skipping to each Lewis quote and ignoring the rest.

I really enjoyed this book, and I used it to facilitate some of my scripture study. I like to study gospel topics by subject, so this was a great way to do it. I liked reading quotes by apostles and prophets on each topic alongside ones by C.S. Lewis. It has inspired me to read more books by C.S. Lewis, particularly Mere Christianity.
