This was a hard book for me to read and I had to put it aside for over a week after reading the part where they lost all their pets in a fire. The author poured all his grief into this book (grief I myself have felt) but not on a scale such as his. To lose 5 beloved pets at one time is heart-wrenching but to read how they handled their grief, how they handled people who just "didn't get it" re-enforced for me that there are others who do understand. When we open up our hearts to an animal we also open up the knowledge that the day will come when we must say goodbye. A very sad read but one I don't regret.

A book that is at turns horrifying, heartbreaking, and hopeful. Dave Congalton's honest, poignant writing invited me in, and I was right there with him as he went through his journey of grieving the tragedy that took all five of his pets. Although friends and community members showed amazing empathy and willingness to help, others (including close family) weren't as supportive, and couldn't seem to grasp the depth of grief Dave and his then-wife, Charlotte, experienced. Pet lovers who have lost a furry friend will unfortunately recognize the unvoiced (and sometimes voiced) opinion that it's not as though a "real" family member was lost. I'm left with the thought that pets have so much to teach us. They tell us to keep it simple: eat, sleep, play. Most of all, they remind us of what we all must do--and what Dave and Charlotte did at the end of this book--keep our hearts wide open. Despite the inevitability of heartache and loss, love is always worth it.
