Review # 1 was written on 2014-03-01 00:00:00 Jay Nichols Deathly dull, of course. But in its day Gantt's system for work produced the Gantt Chart and an approach to project management which helped to construct the Hoover Dam and the USA's Interstate Highway System. His methodology began when America got into WWI and US General Gravier realized that ordnance previously required by the hundreds would need quickly to be mass produced in the millions. This ramped-up scope of work required a new methodology for manufacturing which held workers to specific times spent on production and measured their progress in real-time each day as a manufacturing or construction project progressed. The Gantt Chart became prolific and is still used a century later worldwide to illustrate performance. In fact, MS Project still displays the trusty, clunky, 100-year old Gantt Chart in 2013 MS Project software. Henry Laurence Gantt never patented his inventions or methods but rather gave them openly and his government was most appreciative of his public spirited generosity. Gantt's techniques enabled manufacturing companies to stay on or ahead of schedule, on budget, brought worker initiative into play on the factory floor, engaged workers and helped produce new manufacturing approaches which enabled America to become a manufacturing and construction force as scale ramped up for epic projects. Gantt died in 1919 as a wealthy and one-of-a-kind management consultant. |
