I started following baseball in 1961. A Detroit Tiger fan for ever. I was 8 years old. Ernie Harwell started broadcasting for the Tigers in 1960. I literally grew up listening to him call the games. I was that kid that snuck a transistor radio to bed to listen to the games growing up. I cried when he past away. It was as if part of my childhood had been taken away. Even going to games fans would bring radios to listen to his play by play as they watched it live. I know this because you didn't have to bring a radio, you could hear his distinctive voice softly in the background of a stadium full of fans. There will never be another announcer like Ernie. He was like a friend that I never met. This book doesn't replace his voice and the stories he would tell but it was nice to get the feeling again of his uniqueness and memories of old Tiger Stadium.

Loved it! Zoomed through it quickly. I grew up listening to Ernie Harwell and I always loved his folksy story telling. Nobody knew the history of baseball and all its little vignettes like Ernie and unfortunately they all died with him. Nobody carried himself with more class, either. His passion and appreciation for life and baseball comes through in this book. I never missed him more than when I finished the final page.
