Unlike most guide books, this has essay-length pieces of the history and culture on the target country. Venezuela's beauty pageant culture, its cult, if you will, of Bolivar, and its oil wealth-fueled consumerism are all covered in depth. The guidebook also explores the nation from its Caribbean beaches to the tiny German colony Tovar in the Andes. The nightlife and cuisine of Caracas are given prominent exposure. Plenty of pictures bring this beautiful land of Lost World and the legend of El Dorado to life. I'm ready to go.

There were some interesting ideas laid out in this book. But the structure was a mess and the blending of travel writing and historical reference was incongruous. I also found many of the arguments posited to be a stretch and so marinated in academic theory craft as to leave this reader dubious of the conclusions drawn. The reason I read the book was I had expressed interest in learning more about the origin story of El Dorado after reading The Lost City Of Z. My stepfather, who reviews books, gave me his copy. I do feel like I better understand some of the origin story.
