Review # 1 was written on 2019-01-13 00:00:00 Josh Neil This is a wonderful history of Cannery Row. And an absolute must-read for any fans of Steinbeck's famous novel. You will learn about the sardine industry and how it crashed and burned; you will learn about the many nationalities of people who settled to work in the canneries and all about the endlessly fascinating character of Ed Ricketts--a great friend of Steinbeck's and the model for "Doc" in the novel. In addition to the detailed biography of Ricketts and Steinbeck, I loved the last chapter's presentation of how the aquarium was such a fitting monument to the town.Wonderful book! |
Review # 2 was written on 2009-01-13 00:00:00 Brian Lo Captures the Row midway between Steinbeck's Row of the '40s and today's tourist-trap madhouse, in atmospheric black-and-white meditations. Exceedingly charming. |
