Kristiansen's argument is complex and involved, but to put it in the simplest way, he claims the emergence of a world system linking Europe from the Nordic region into the Mediterranean. No doubt there has been much new research since "Europe Before History" was published in 1998, but it is still surely a fundamental read for anyone interested in how Europe developed across the long haul from the Bronze to the Iron Ages.
