Review # 1 was written on 2020-03-27 00:00:00 Constance Patellos This is a gem of a book for any person interested in the history of Edo or Japanese city building in general. It is rather light in terms of being an academic work, but it is visually stunning and lovingly illustrated which more than makes up for the light reading. This is, as far as I can tell, the only English language book on Edo (and these are rare in general) to offer the reader a truly visual experience of the city. Even if you are a serious academic, the written word does very little to convey the visual landscape of a city as well as an illustration or photo might - the illustrations are truly beautiful. Buy this little masterpiece, for it will make you imaginings of the city that more richer. You won't be disappointed. |
Review # 2 was written on 2015-10-01 00:00:00 Frank Flaminio Borrowed it from my local library in Koto-ku squeezed in among the translations of local crime writer, Miyuki Miyabe and Jeffrey Archer books that comprise our English language section. Accessible and interesting general history material about Japan is hard to find. There are dry books on the Japanese miracle, on the bubble, books on the war and books filled with endless lists of shoguns killing daimyos. Instead, this is nice piece of social history that focuses on four hundred years in the development of modern Tokyo. Possibly, in the original Japanese it was aimed at children, but well I like it, and recommend it to anyone who lives in Tokyo and wonders how the city came to be. |
