Review # 1 was written on 2018-07-24 00:00:00 Jacqueline Robinson As mentioned in the book description, Spirits of '76 has an essay on each of the following Founding Fathers: Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Rush, John Adams, Charles Carroll, George Washington, and Alexander Hamilton as well as a forward and concluding chapter. I read the forward, conclusion, and the essays on Jefferson, Carroll, Washington, and Hamilton. With an inadequate education in Thomistic teachings, political science, and the writings of men like Locke, Bacon, Descartes, Kant, Rousseau and many others, my understanding of the essays was partial at best. In spite of this, I got a lot out of this book and think it is a very important work. After reading fictionalized accounts of Jefferson and Hamilton which referred to many other Founding Fathers, it is good to see one aspect of them in actual history, an aspect that is very important to me - their understanding of God and how it applies to their political beliefs. I found the conclusion to be the best part of the book as further compares these men and how some of their commonalities played out differently in their political choices, and visa versa. It has inspired me to read further about Charles Carroll and Benjamin Rush who were the serious Christians of those featured. I highly recommend Spirits of '76, and would love to read another similar book which further explains some of the challenging elements of this book.
