This book is crucially helpful in that it highlights themes from humanistic psychologists (Jung, Erikson) that midlife is part of human development and needs to be navigated as such. It is usually precipitated by crises and requires a redirecting of energy and re-evaluating of the ideals and goals of early adulthood, a re-figuring of identity that requires a willingness to abandon old paths and ways. A broad theme is that we face a choice in midlife: a descent into isolation and bitterness or a growth into expansiveness and generativity. Hardin seeks to show the path into the latter and what habits and characteristics accompany it. I found the book psychologically-astute, compassionate, trauma-informed, and often insightful. And despite the author's obvious Christian background, she worked hard to bring in examples from Taoism and even Buddhism and Hinduism. However, most of the insights came in the first 40% of the book, and the rest of it was filled with case studies, long spiritual excurses, and reiterations of the same ideas. So, it was a bit of a slog to get some really good content that I did truly appreciate, hence the 3-star rating: "I liked it."

Paula Payne Hardin's book is a life saver. An outstanding, thought-provoking, reassuring guide to assist in understanding fears, and navigating obstacles that come with the second half of life in our American society and culture. Hardin rightly identifies that we in America have no 'way' of growing old successfully. She lays out a gentle, kind, soulful, heartfelt text that just made me feel better. Her honesty and sharing of her own experiences as well as those of her study group made me realize how truly magnificent this past of my life can be. It's funny I bought this book very near its original publishing date in the early 90's but I did not read it until just this year, 2018. It came to me when I needed it most. Paula Payne Hardin was ahead of her time then and right on time for me now. I am grateful I found this book.
