It's really not all that "new" anymore, published in 2003. But I would definitely call this book a photography encyclopedia. It has everything you'd ever want to know about photography and more. It's a wonderful resource for tips and strategies on how to set your camera and compose a shot under any type of conditions. It's definitely a more technical book, but has great explanations of photography terms as well as a rather extensive glossary. Beginners can benefit from certain sections in this book, but it also has a lot of information for more professional photographers including sections on studio equipment and actual dark room film development.

BIG book with lots of information. I've owned it for years but never really opened it. Finally took a scan through it today as i was looking for specifics on portraiture. Love how he's got lighting/studio sketches for photo shoots and results pictures with captions that clearly articulate what the photo is representing. Covers a broad list of topics, from film to composure to lighting. Great refernce guide for any photographers library.
