Review # 1 was written on 2009-01-18 00:00:00 Joe Noble Originally Cassuto's doctoral dissertation, the author combines analysis of the linguistic limitations of language dealing with the environment; analysis of four novels: Mary Austin's THE FORD, John Steinbeck's THE GRAPES OF WRATH, Edward Abbey's THE MONKEY WRENCH GANG, and Barbara Kingsolver's ANIMAL DREAMS with regard to water, land use, and human influence both agricultural and urban; and the local, state, and federal politics of water, focusing on the arid lands of the plains and western states, or as Wallace Stegner has posited, "west of the 100th meridian". Dripping Dry is a thoroughly researched history of the past, present, and possible future and the impact of water, or lack thereof, on life in the Western states. The comprehensive bibliography and notes make this a useful source. With current cycles of increasing drought, this is a fascinating read for Californians and residents of all western states. |
