Review # 2 was written on 2010-08-21 00:00:00 Oliver James An intriguing read, but large portions of it simply reiterated relatively common US history; however, this was (generally) used in context to explain the author's connections, comparisons, and contrasts between the US and Sweden. Perhaps this is the result of reading too much classic literature recently or perhaps I just tend to read very well-written books, but The Swedish Secret read a little...juvenilely sometimes. Not in tonality or voice, but merely the author's ability to express himself in words. It was a bit of a shame. In addition, some of the information is outdated. Even though the book is only four years old, a vast majority of major and world-affecting events have occurred since its publication. Overall, a recommended read if you are at all intrigued by the similarities and differences between Sweden and the US, but its not a book I would just pick up for a light read or a quick, direct bit of information. |
