Review # 1 was written on 2011-09-22 00:00:00 Brett Gulden [Big reassessment and revision downward on this one.] Dropping the rating on this book from five to three stars. I thought this book was the shit in the '90s but looking at it now it's obvious it could have been done much better. Many of the photos are too small and sometimes repeated on the same page. Large photos are printed dark and even smudgy. I've seen other wine region books since that are printed with much more robust clarity. The binding construction is also rather cheapjack and sketchy and seems cardboardy and fragile. I used to be OK with the PR-ish text but now I find it less excusable. Books should be for readers, not to circle jerk the people in the book. ---- original review below for reference; this represents my previous assessment: OK, I haven't *read* all of this book; it's primarily a photo essay book and as such is quite stunning. It's probably the best way to do a grand tour of the wineries of the continent without moving from your comfy chair. The pictures of the interiors and exteriors of the wineries are varied and evocative: you really get a sense of being there. This large, but not immense, book has a special place in my collection. The text is mostly fawning PR-type stuff; very rah rah to the wineries herein and to the industry, but we accept this going in. We love wine, wineries, vineyards, travel, the mystique, the images - all of that.

Review # 2 was written on 2013-01-12 00:00:00 James Lundgren A little dated by now, but it still remains an excellent survey in English of all the wine producing regions in Italy (up to 1980).
