As with all Allchin books, this book expanded my vision of the faith, introduced me to several writers, and led me into worship. To give a sense of Allchin's goal in writing the book, here is a short quote from the Introduction, "These affirmations seek always to recognize the utter mysteriousness of all that we can say about God. They spring from a union of love and knowledge in which men and women are taken out of themselves, transcend their own limitations, in a movement of praise and adoration, which enlarges and transforms their capacities of seeing and knowing, as well as loving and acting." He explores the writing of St Symeon the New Theologian alongside the praises of the Welsh writer Pantycelyn caught up in the fire of God's love. He introduces the pastor and hymnist NFS Grundtvig who remains virtually unknown outside his Danish homeland. Again and again, Grundtvig writes songs about the Table of the Lord, "In Jesus's Name where tongues catch fire Amongst gentiles as amongst Jews, In the sacrificial cup of Jesus's name All mother-tongues fuse into one, In Jesus's Name there bursts forth the Eternal Hallelujah." This is a collection of essays he wrote over the years, so the book is not following a consistent pattern, and yet, each essay always leads us to praise.

I'm re-reading some of the titles which have meant the most to me in my spiritual journey, and A. M. Allchin has written several of them. This collection of essays, subtitled The encounter between Orthodoxy and the West, explores some of the movements, and especially the theologians and writers, in the Anglican tradition, which have most reflected close similarities to the riches of Orthodoxy. A stimulating, heart-warming and soul-nourishing read.
