This is a really underappreciated anthology and I wish it had gotten more attention. Biracial and multiracial people are rapidly becoming a clear majority of our population in America, if they aren't already. Yet little time and attention has been spent hearing what it's like to grow up with two (or more) very different cultures. I related to many of the pieces in this book as Jewish woman, growing up in Texas, with a non-Jewish father, who didn't "look Jewish" or have a Jewish last name. It brings up all sort of complicated experiences that are rarely talked about, and I know my experience is just the tip of the iceberg. I'd love to see this book get back into circulation and be more widely read. As a therapist, I have a copy of it in my office.

During the Philadelphia stop of her book tour, the author of Care Work: Dreaming Disability Justice mentioned how reading this book did a lot for them, and so I went and found it for myself. I have spent a long time thinking up how to write about my own experiences with being mixed race, but never feeling like it was an endeavor worthy of making space. So this book did a lot for me. This book was published in the 90s, in Canada, and has a predominance of personal stories from mixed race Black lesbians. There are stories from biracial people, from multiply mixed types of peoples, people with white mothers, people with mothers of color, and so on. There is personal prose, poetry, self-anaylsis, and other writings. It's not academic, though comprised of writing largely from academics (whatever that means to you). If you’re mixed and looking for something to stare into, I recommend it.
