What is this work? Why did it affect me so much? It's not quite poetry, not really essays; prose poems? maybe, but some items are aphorisms, one or two are very short stories; independent meditations, yes, but with a strong linear coherence. It's learned and critical; yet it has an irresistible forward narrative drive, even though there is little real narration. It's nothing but fragments of the author's sex life laced with deeply felt desire, literary eroticism, and unashamed sexuality, but it builds into a philosophy of life, love, and death. It's unmistakably inspired by Renaud Camus' breakthrough Tricks: 25 Encounters and polished by the classic essays of Michel de Montaigne. It's impossible to categorize as other than a welcome unusual combination of literary achievement and honest sexuality. Why is this work unknown? What are the factors which guide a work to commercial success, particularly in a niche genre ignored by the mainstream? One of the joys of reading is discovering unforgettable, forgotten gems like this. If you're interested, used copies can be cheaply bought online, even though it is out of print.
