Review # 1 was written on 2010-05-28 00:00:00 Curtis McClain This was a fun way to look at art and history. The kids loved how parts of each picture were magnified and detailed. I love that each painting is from medieval times therefore we see medieval times the way that the artists of that day did and not from a more modern point of view. Although we have been studying medieval times for many weeks we all still learned something new reading this book. One of the better books out there for this historical period. |
Review # 2 was written on 2012-08-24 00:00:00 Terry Thao Good one. Nice for adults, truth be told. Kids may find the art a bit dry , but I loved it. I do think the expertise is not quite there. E.g. the notion that life in the middle ages was all about drudgery and disease and immanent death, is just not accepted (any longer) by historians. But many of the insights about the artwork (comments about patterns, objects, designs, tactics, morals) I did not know. Probably of most interest to older children, but well worth reading for adults. |
