Review # 1 was written on 2020-01-20 00:00:00 Veronica Gillespie My parents gifted me this book years ago because John Lowe Butler is my ancestor. I’m glad I finally read it! I really enjoyed reading the personal details on his life as well as the historical details about the church, and was surprised how interesting it ended up being. It was truly inspiring to read of his courage, devotion, and faith. |
Review # 2 was written on 2021-01-04 00:00:00 Shane Ridgeway I finally took the time to read this remarkable account about my great great great grandpa. What a life he had! Hartley uses John's own autobiographical notes as the foundation of this book, and laces it together with insights from others of that era and lots of historical insights. John led a life of faith, hard work, and courage. I learned things about LDS history I wasn't aware of such as the Emmet party's early exodus from Nauvoo, Walter's War (a skirmish with the Indians in Utah Valley), and many other things about those people who heard the gospel message and responded to the call to come to Zion. John's story should certainly be read by posterity, and I think anyone interested in early frontier America or LDS history would find it an insightful and worthwhile book. I'm inspired to be a better record keeper because of this ancestor, and am grateful for his legacy of faith. |
