A fun trickster tale about an elderly coyote who enjoys being made young again SO MUCH that he tries to share the gift of youth with everyone . . . whether they want it or not. Nice atmospheric watercolors by the author.

Old Bag of Bones: A Coyote Tale retold and illustrated by Janet Stevens is a folklore book. The age group this book is intended for is primary to intermediate. The story is about a coyote that can see nothing good about being old and is transformed into a young, strong, but not powerful, buffalo. Even though he was told he wouldn't be powerful, he tried to be anyway and lost his youth and strength. I enjoyed the story because of the theme and characters. The theme involved transformation and the story explained the meaning of age is different to everyone. The characters all brought different perspectives. The old coyote only wanted to be young, strong, and powerful and saw nothing good about being old. While the rabbit believed age brought wisdom, the lizard believed age brought respect, and the kangaroo rat believed age brought experience, old coyote thought they were all fools. The illustrations filled the page with color. The old characters were skinny with little hair or wrinkly skin; they looked weak and sick. It depicted the story well. I think this a good book for young readers. The story has transformations and the pictures show the changes and the actions of the characters.
