Review # 2 was written on 2010-06-13 00:00:00 Giovanni Macchia This was an interesting and unique tale, about a young man from a small town in Munster who goes up to Dublin in 1950 after doing his Leaving Cert to take a non-descript job as a clerk in the bureaucracy of a government ministry. And there he discovers that he's gay. He becomes acquainted with a mysterious "older woman" (all of forty, perhpas), who holds soirées, consorts with other extravegant people who live on the fringes of staid and conservative Catholic Ireland. He falls into a doomed love affair with a beautiful, well-to-do University student, which ends in tragedy, disappointment and exile. The story is told in alternating chapters, one in the present (or recent past, the late 1990s), the other in 1950-51, as the narrator'now an old man'returns to Ireland and tries to piece together the threads and meanings of his "coming of age". It was generally rather enjoyable, though could have used some stronger editing. There were some passages and phrase that just didn't seem to ring true. But that's a quibble. |
