I found it interesting to read about the violent interaction between the Iroquois & European settlers in the Susquehanna frontier of NE Pennsylvania. The book provides an accounting of the Revolutionary War from the NY & PA Frontier conflicts and attacks. The centerpiece of the book is the Sugarloaf Massacre on September 11th, 1780. I have gone past the memorial marker on Walnut Street in Conyngham,PA which is a 2.5 mile drive from my home - not realizing the full significance of this place to local and regional history. Soldiers in Colonel Stephen Balliet's detail who came to bury the dead from the Sugarloaf Massacre returned to Fort Allen in Western PA. They sent word to their families in Northhampton County of the Sugarloaf Valley's beauty and charm. "It was splendid country for farming or the woodsman's axe." If you are resident of the Sugarloaf Valley, I recommend this book because: "The Sugarloaf Massacre was one of a score of barbarous and ultimately futile actions carried out on the frontier during the war." The account provides a greater understanding of our community's beginnings. "After the fury of muskets and tomahawks of our country's first Military conflict finally abated, settlers entered the Sugarloaf Valley. The wild and scenic valley dominated by the Sugarloaf Mountain became the cherished home of many.

Lots of photos, lots of history as well as lots of facts and details about the USS New Jersey. Also has personal anecdotes by crew members and visitors including eyewitness accounts of many of the operations this ship was involved in.
