Review # 2 was written on 2016-05-12 00:00:00 Robert Gilbert Haila and Jeff Troy have just started to move into their new basement apartment in a Greenwich Village brownstone. They stop to go out to dinner and while at the restaurant, Haila overhears a sinister-looking man making phone arrangements with another man to meet in their apartment (which had been empty for a long time). Worse yet, the following morning a nude corpse is found in their tiny garden--and he had been drowned in their bathtub. This is very much a story of its time--1942, when sophisticated husband and wife sleuths were "in." It is an extremely well-plotted and well written story, funny and intelligent, perhaps a tiny bit madcap. I enjoyed it tremendously, and if the character of Jeff was only lightly sketched in, it was made up for with the character of Haila. Recommend for anyone who likes Golden Age mysteries, or just needs something light and witty to clear their palate. |
