This is a terrific book on early Chicago. Self-published by Ulrich Danckers and Jane Meredith, it shines a light on early Chicago history - so early it ends with 1835, shortly after the founding of the city. Filled with maps and illustrations, the single edition hardcover book is beautifully produced. Since it was self-published it never sold in the hundreds of thousands, but don't let that fool you. It is well worth putting in one's library. The authors continue to expand the entries and the narrative in a well-developed Web site (). At the site, you can purchase a copy or simply search the book itself. This makes an excellent research source for those interested in Chicago history from that early period. This book received little attention in the highly competitive market for print, but it still is five-star material.

I did not realize that an updated version of this history had been released about a decade ago. This edition already feels dated (even for it's publication date in the late 70s and early 80s). Though it is only meant to serve as a cursory glance at Presbyterian history I felt it lacked depth, a critical reading of the evidence, and sensitivity.
