With twenty-four songs, riddles, playground rhymes, and tales, this unique and delightful folk collection from Carmen T. Bernier-Grand - whose I Can Read Book, Juan Bobo , also contained selections from the folklore of her native Puerto Rico - is sure to delight young readers, particularly those with a taste for word games. As the author notes herself, the one full-length folktale, The Legend of the Hummingbird, has also been retold in other works - from Pura Belpré's collection, Once in Puerto Rico , to Michael Rose Ramirez's picture-book, The Legend of the Hummingbird . But many of the other selections are made available to the English-speaker for the first time, in Shake It, Morena!. Here is the hand-clapping rhyme, La Calla Ancha, similar in style to Miss Mary Mack. Here are songs for parent and child, like the Waking Up Song, and for learning math, like Dos y Dos Son Cuatro. Animal riddles, spelling games, and special snacks - like the frozen pineapple juice ice-cubes called "Limbers," after the famous aviator Charles Lindbergh, whose behavior, while visiting Puerto Rico, was distinctly cold and unfriendly - are all here. My favorite of the lot, was probably the secret language of Jeringonza (similar in idea to Pig Latin), in which "chi" is added to the beginning of every syllable. Not being especially musical, I couldn't really work out how the songs were to be sung (although sheet music is provided at the rear), and would have appreciated an accompanying CD. Other than that, I enjoyed this anthology immensely, from Bernier-Grand's selections, to Lulu Delacre's illustrations, which were colorful and charming. In fact, the artwork provided one more game: twenty-seven tiny brown lizards, hidden in the illustrations, waiting to be picked out, by careful viewers!

This is a great collection of simple rhymes, songs and folktales from Puerto Rico. Some would be fun to add in class. There are some games that would be very easy to teach to students. The songs also have written music to go along with them at the back of the book. The book provides English translations or context clues for all Spanish used.
