Review # 1 was written on 2020-06-26 00:00:00 Mathew Hawn This was a lucky second-hand bookshop find. A slim memorial volume of poems, recollections, appreciations and pieces about and by Philip Larkin published shortly after his death. The quality is uniformly high throughout and the sense of loss at the passing of a major literary figure is tangible. Illustrated by previously unseen photographs and Larkin’s own doodles, An Enormous Yes is a sad but fitting tribute to one of the great twentieth century poets. There’s an irony that I think Larkin would have enjoyed though - having argued strongly throughout his life against state subsidy of the arts, this tribute was part-funded by the Arts Council! |
