Review # 1 was written on 2021-04-12 00:00:00 Rick Delis This book's got a bad rap from Goodreads. While Simpkins gets quite a few facts wrong, and while sometimes the book reads like THE COLTRANE READER (lots of long--but apt--quotes from other works), he does a GREAT job getting at emotional and artistic truths more diligent, tidy scholars miss. Personally, it's my favorite of the three I've now read. Simpkins also does a way better job mining Coltrane's personal life for key moments and influences.

Review # 2 was written on 2019-02-21 00:00:00 Franklin D Mills Ormond's bio reads more like a novel than a scholarly work. There aren't a lot of facts, it's more a character study of as man searching for the spiritual through music.
