From the description I read somewhere (I think maybe a reading list from The Futility Closet) I thought this might be an interesting read. I was wrong. It's a list with very brief descriptions of odd buildings in England. Usually only one or two paragraphs long. Here's an example: "Costly and colossal is this gaunt, sham windowed facade dated 1792. All the hotch potch of architectural features beloved by amateur folly builders are here: towers, round and octagonal, strangely proportioned windows, cruciform arrow slits, plain walls, embattled walls, bricks, flint -- all jumbled together to create what surely must be the most joyfully eccentric farmhouse in Britain." I was hoping for more. Some history on why these were built or who built them would have been nice. There are some maps which might be useful if I was really in the areas on the maps, but they don't actually have locations of the "follies" marked. The publisher lists books of art and popular antiques. Perhaps this is intended as a catalog for someone who is interested in purchasing an architectural folly. I think perhaps the biggest folly is me thinking it would be interesting.
