Review # 1 was written on 2020-09-15 00:00:00 Christina Wright One of, if not the only work to concentrate on the difficulties encountered by the trade movement, in the form of its umbrella organisation The Irish Trades Union Congress, in Ireland from the period of its split in the mid 1940's; into 2 separate organisations until it resurrected itself in a new body The Irish Congress of Trade Unions in the late 1950's. Here he recognises and gives voice to the largely forgotten men and women who toiled tirelessly against the potential of sectarianism within the movement to create a body truly representative of all workers in Ireland. The work does not gloss over the difficult issues that were caused by fervent nationalism on the one hand and a Unionism inherent in the "British based" amalgamated unions and how it played out in how unions not solely Irish based could exercise political and industrial autonomy. perhaps best summed up by Andy Holmes from the ATGWU; when he said at the re-unification conference that my union trusts its members in Ireland to deal with all its Irish affairs.
