Engaging true escape story from WW2 which takes place in the Mediterranean after Howell is injured, left for dead then captured. His recovery, inner spiritual renewal and ultimate escape entwine to leave the reader with more than just a remarkable tale of adventure. The fact that his bid for freedom began while his two injured arms were virtually unusable is remarkable in itself. For its age and time, this storytelling doesn’t hold back from describing the hardships, privations and injuries that were part of war in the Mediterranean. Howell’s Christian convictions are fundamental to the account rather than feeling overlayed. His escape and survival would not have happened as it did were it not for his faith, which informed many of his critical decisions along the way. That said, I’d describe Howell as a Christian moralist rather than an evangelical. His transformation is clearly genuine, and his commitment and integrity inform his life and decisions in a way that is quite arresting. However, there is perhaps one single reference to Jesus, the Bible is a guidebook and the core of Howell’s creed seems to be,”Try harder, do better and depend on God.” Repentance and Faith, God’s wrath, the Cross as God’s means of salvation, forgiveness and grace are never articulated. Clearly I am an evangelical Christian, so the above criticism may not hamper many readers enjoyment of this great true story of courage, endurance and, ultimately, freedom. I thank God The world has been spared war on such a scale since.
