I found this while sorting through books in my parents' house. I'm not sure where they got it, but it's a fun, abbreviated history of the town in England that is the source of my last name. It probably serves best as a guide to local residents, as it makes references to local features without explaining them or necessarily providing images. That said, it was really delightful to see some of the role my "home town" has had in English history. There's a heavy emphasis on the town's most distinctive feature, its massive cathedral. The best bits of the book, though, are where the author identifies how the cathedral featured differently in the life of the community throughout history. I can't say I'd recommend this to anyone without my last name, as the appeal is so particular. But I'm glad I read it nonetheless.

Comprehensive behind-the-scenes story of how the NY:NJ Port Authority was created, which was actually the owner of the World Trade Center (who knew??) and all the in-fighting that went on to design and build the 2 towers. The book is written (prior to the 9/11 attacks) by an American Studies college professor, and while it's very interesting, it's not a smooth trajectory. He back tracks and reiterates some of the same history/politics in several of the chapters, almost as if each chapter was written to stand alone as a scholarly article on some topic (history of NYC politics, role of unions, etc) rather than be a building block for the chapter to follow in the book.
