I read this immediately after having read Buchan's biography of Scott. I'm glad I read Buchan first, I found his story startling and profoundly moving. That powerful impact would not have been felt if I had read Sutherland's book first. Sutherland does not tell a story so much as he sets himself up as the destroyer of myths, especially those first set down by Scott's son-in-law, Lockwood. Sutherland likes to 'disprove' every tiny little detail, and damn both Lockwood and Scott's characters in the process. I did not find this biography 'sceptical but sympathetic', rather, I found it unjustly judgemental (being a Tory is not necessarily evil), petty and sometimes scurrilous. I do think Buchan's book was too haliographic, but I'd prefer error in this direction in a biography of a man such as Scott. Despite Sutherland's best efforts, I still admire Scott for his industry, sense of honour, generosity of spirit and creative genius. I don't feel he was an unpardonable monster towards his family, that he should somehow be blamed for the early deaths of his children, that his ambition - in creating Abbotsford and so much else - makes him despicable. I wondered why Sutherland even wanted to write this biography, as he seemed to have so little admiration for Scott. The reason I gave this book two stars, rather than one, was because I did enjoy Sutherland's evaluations of Scott's works.

References other biogs heavily. Properly critical of Scott's behaviours, and picks at Lockhart's glossing of much in the Life. Good on the novels themselves. Starts and ends abruptly, frustrating the usual expectations of an introduction and ceasing with the death, nothing about the afterlife of the publishing or the later impact on the novel in English.
