Review # 1 was written on 2010-07-30 00:00:00 Mark Clark I am constitutionally incapable of giving any Havel-related materials less than a full five-star rating. |
Review # 2 was written on 2008-05-01 00:00:00 Arturo Escarze A friend recently mentioned that there's a large photo of Havel at a local blues club, posing with the owner, and I said, "Hovel who?" So, that's full disclosure. And then I read this recently (written by Michael Pollan OF. COURSE.) in The New York Times Magazine: "Sometimes you have to act as if acting will make a difference, even when you can’t prove that it will. That, after all, was precisely what happened in Communist Czechoslovakia and Poland, when a handful of individuals like Vaclav Havel and Adam Michnik resolved that they would simply conduct their lives “as if” they lived in a free society. That improbable bet created a tiny space of liberty that, in time, expanded to take in, and then help take down, the whole of the Eastern bloc." I'm hoping this book will redeem me of my ignorance. |
