Sometimes in your life you want to meet your contemporaries. When living in Southern California during the 90's I always wanted to meet Jerry Schad. He would be hopping down a trail with a notebook in hand and a topo map in a Ziploc bag dangling from his backpack strap. I would be struggling up the sandy trail hoping for a rest stop where the Chaparral above me somehow blocked out the sun for a moment. It might be hike Number 54 in his book we were working toward completing, choosing this one because of his illustrative description and the data required to determine how long I could be hiking that day. He would be dressed in the gear on the book flap. A kind of 1980's pre Supplex clothes selection meant to create airy coolness in the exposed SoCal Mountains regardless of the negative properties of cotton. I would be decked out in the latest REI/Sierra Trading Post/Campmor regalia designed to wick away the sweat and provide UV protection. We would discuss everything from the best 102nd Hike, to the effect of climatology on these old National Forest Trails, to the finest ingredients of trail mix, and how I really preferred the layout of the first edition to the second. I believe it may be in its 5th Wilderness Press addition by now. Sadly Jerry died of Kidney Cancer a while back and I have not lived in Southern California since the 90's, but every time, no matter the location I hit the trail, his influence and guiding prose has influenced my walking into the wilderness. Spiritually I am always seeing Jerry Schad on the trail, only now it will hopefully be a long time before I catch up.
