Review # 1 was written on 2008-03-27 00:00:00 Kenneth Martin I had heard good reviews about this book and thought I'd check it out from our local library. I discovered that we've hiked about a third of the trails that are listed and I'm familiar with many of the others. We've also hiked at least two of the "no longer available" trails, ones that have been closed down due to the dangers of flash floods and other natural disasters. I really enjoyed the introducation and historical background in the beginning of the book and I love the tidbits that are added to each trip description. Oahu is a fascinating place to visit and we've absolutely loved living here. Since we have to move in just a few months, we are trying to explore as many new places as we can, trying to find family-friendly trails so we can experience it as a family. This is a great book in that regard and provides many suggestions for these kinds of trips as well as other, more strenuous and adventurous trips. Like another reviewer, I was also a little frustrated by the "tourist-visitor" focus, but that's okay. The book is for people who aren't already familiar with the island and its trails. I am not that much more knowledgeable, even though I've lived here for a total of 6 years. |
Review # 2 was written on 2018-01-13 00:00:00 Brad Jakeman This book was very useful for our family when we lived on Oahu. We used it a couple times a month when we took the kids out to explore the island. It describes in fairly good detail the location, difficulty, length, and facilities provided of trails all over the island. It does have a visitor-tourist focus, but we still found it useful. It also provides a lot of interesting background on the island of Oahu. |
