The Good: Side-by-side columns comparing what is written in Ethan Smith's "View of the Hebrews" with Joseph Smith's "The Book of Mormon." Very interesting comparisons involving portions of the book of Isaiah. Very informative on the background of 19th century New York and New England from which Mormonism's founders emerged. Presents evidence showing that Ethan Smith was the pastor of the Congregational church in Poultney, VT, which is the church that Oliver Cowdery's family attended. Smith was writing "View of the Hebrews" at the time that the Cowderys were members of his congregation (1821-1826). The Bad: Smith overstates his case and stretches the comparisons a bit too far at times. Quotations from "View" and the "BofM" are often full of elipses and there is little indication how disparate the aggregated text is. Neglects or disregards other interesting theories on the origin of the "BofM." The Ugly: A difficult read, certainly not a page-turner. Devout Mormons are likely to be offended sufficiently to stop reading. Four stars for the information content and "literary pedigree" that this gives to one interested in Mormon studies.

I read the first edition and really liked it. It goes into detail about how much of The Book of Mormon was directly lifted from the book "View of the Hebrew." There are some pretty slanderous things said about Joseph Smith, and the overall tone reminds me of Thomas Paine's "The Age of Reason," but I doubt that someone who's already a firm believer in the Mormon faith will be swayed by it. The overall theme of "how can anyone believe this?" can be grating, but the evidence itself is hard to deny.
