"This book is written for the curious...those who enjoy the hunt for solutions to the unexplained. It offers an introduction to the intriguing theories of the experts. But, like any good mystery, the unraveling ultimately relies on the limits of the reader's imagination." -from the back cover. Interesting book on King Arthur. It is a summary of all the legends, myths, and theories concerning Arthur. I have always been extremely interested and intrigued by the ancient Arthurian legends, and at the same time disgusted by the later Arthurian tales. And sadly, it is the later Arthurian tales that most people are familiar with. According to this book, (and common sense), very little is really known about Arthur. Some even say he never existed. But though faced with so much conflicting traditions and accounts, it seems most modern historians agree that "a hero named Arthur did exist, although no evidence suggests that he was ever acknowledged as king of Britain. He was born in about 470 A.D. into a Christian family that still sympathized with Rome and its way of life, even though the British Isles were coming out of Roman rule. He probably started his career as a local chief or noble, but as his valorous reputation spread, he gathered an army of knights who fought where their services were needed. This is the foundation of fact on which the structure of the Arthurian tales was later built. But no one knows how much, if any, of the other details of the Arthurian legends are true." Much of the book covers the other Arthurian legends, most of which originated in between 1190 and the 1400's...close to 600 years after Arthur lived. So to me, this book just strengthened my beliefs in the ancient Roman-era Arthur, and reinforced my disgust in the later "Arthurian Romances":) Yep, I'm a die-hard enthusiast of King Arthur... and also of the '04 movie "King Arthur" with Clive Owen and Keira Knightley....;)

This book collects pro and con arguments in a discussion of the fundamental basis and goals of Artificial Intelligence research. Can military robots be programmed to act ethically? Can an AI computer pass a Turing Test? Will Smart Cars help or hinder travel? Sci-Fi author and robotics researcher Vernor Vinge discusses the coming technological singularity, which Ken McLeod has called the "rapture for nerds." Fascinating and scary trip through some difficult questions.
