Review # 2 was written on 2014-11-20 00:00:00 Darrell Oliver This was such a beautiful book on so many levels. It was a book that I read many times through my early teenage years. I didn't research the historical accuracy of the book. But that hardly mattered. The era is during the Spanish Inquisition. The setting is on an island where children are stranded and in turn left to fend for themselves in a hostile environment. Henye Mayer masterfully took the audience by the hand and helped them explore difficult emotions that are often not articulate well for young readers. Courage. Bravery. Fear. Responsibility. Leadership. And ultimately, love and loyalty. (In hindsight, it has many similarities to the Lord of the flies. Another favorite of mine.) |
