Technically, this book could stay on my "Currently Reading" shelf all year long because unfortunately, I am in the year of mourning for my father, and I refer to this book when questions come up. Like the title says, it's a reference guide for the laws of mourning, though I often find the rulings confusing, especially when there is a difference of opinion. So ultimately, I end up calling my own rav, which is the best thing to do in any case. The book is certainly thorough and made me aware of minhagim I didn't know. For example, without this book, I would not have known that it was customary to go to the gravesite the day one gets up from shiva. And once I'd gone, I was able to make use of the part of the book I especially appreciate: the tefillos to say at a gravesite. Praying alone that way made me more emotional than the funeral itself, and I think that's a good thing. May my tefillos be a zchus for my father. I received a copy of this book from my best friend on the first day of my shiva. Since this is not a book one would ever buy for oneself, I recommend buying it for a close friend in need, just as my friend did for me. But make sure it's a close friend. All mourners are different, but to me, it wouldn't have felt right from an acquaintance.

While not a book that anyone would choose to read, this book has provided great comfort in the seven months since I lost my mother, especially by explaining the how and why of Jewish mourning customs. If you are unfortunate enough to suffer a bereavement, seek it out from your Synagogue library or order it to read. I'm so glad I did! We were initially lent a copy by Rabbi Michoel Rose in Cardiff and referred to it constantly in the run up to Mummy's funeral and the first night of Shiva. When we got back to London, our Shul only had one copy, so I ordered mine online from "Torah Treasures" in. Golders Green as they were cheaper than Amazon for this US import.
