Review # 1 was written on 2021-06-05 00:00:00 Barbara Welling A compact and good text on voting theory and fair division problems pitched at a higher level than most. The only undergraduate I've found on the subject which covers ideas like the Smith set or a modern voting procedure like Schulze's method (aka beatpath method). Doesn't shy away from giving more details on Kuhn's fair division method for greater than 3 people and the relevance of Hall's marriage theorem. The author's surname is Börgers not B'Orgers as GoodReads has. |
Review # 2 was written on 2016-07-15 00:00:00 Matt Beman Very nice. I especially appreciated the details on Babylonian and Egyptian mathematical syntax. It would be 4 stars if it went deeper into those and the Oriental contributions, but it focuses on the usual Mediterranean/European history. There was a fair bit on the Arabic era (the supposed Dark Ages) which was nice and the authors emphasize praise for my favorite little known Mathematical hero Evariste Galois. |
