Finally! Finally, I had the eyes of my mind savor some delicate Persian (though translated) verses. And that too, of one of the most revered mystics- Rumi. Gardens of the Beloved is a collection of quatrains; simple in language and ethereally beautiful. The order in which poems appear is set by the translator in a way that they seem to take you on a journey. A tale that ought to inspire the weakest and the strongest; the lover and the hater; the selfless and the selfish; the good and the bad. Some verses because of the way they are composed, leave such a lasting impression that at the end one feels a strong urge to quickly revert back and revisit the beauty and the light that felt like emanating from those passages. I'll cite a couple of instances: Do you know, knower, what the night is? It is the sanctuary of lovers. On this glorious night I am drunk with the moon. The moon has fallen in love and the night has gone mad. In love, ask for madness, a life abandoned and a mind lost, ask for dangerous adventures in deserts filled with blood and fire! Needless to say, the reading experience was at times transcendental. And yes, from time to time, I was reminded of Tagore's Gitanjali. Maybe he was highly influenced by Rumi's works and his way of life and thinking. And yes, some verses were accompanied with their counterpart Persian calligraphic texts which definitely added to the ,if not reading, viewing pleasure. Overall, a silent meditative read.
