Have you (or someone you know) ever panicked because you didn't know where you parked your car at the mall or how you even got there in the first place? Have you spent hours picking out clothes, unable to decide on what to wear? Have you had unexplained items appear at your home or on your credit card bill that you don't remember purchasing? Do you have gaps of time--of hours, days, weeks, months or even years--in your memory? Do you sometimes hear voices inside your head? If so, you (or your loved one) may have MPD, multiple personality disorder. When we experience traumatic events, sometimes our minds try to insulate us from the negative feelings by dissociating from them. We may relegate those experiences to some "other" person, actually spinning off alternate personalities or partitioning our minds to isolate the damaging affects of what happened. There are different levels and methods of dissociation, but all are designed to protect us from pain. Dr. James G. Friesen is experienced at diagnosing and dealing with this problem. Although he did not seek out a ministry to MPD sufferers, the Lord has brought many to him through the years and has taught him and his counseling team how to deal with their particular needs. Using examples from his clinical experience (carefully concealing clients' identities to protect their confidentiality), diagrams, charts, lists, interviews and excerpts from other people's writings, the author gives a great overview of what MPD is, what causes it, and how it can be properly dealt with and resolved. He also describes one of the leading causes of MPD, Satanic ritual abuse (SRA), and how to help clients process those experiences, as well. His approach is a wonderful marriage of traditional counseling, discipleship and deliverance ministry--dealing with both the emotional/psychological and spiritual needs of the individual. I actually know one of his former clients, who is now an amazing woman involved in counseling hurting individuals herself! If you or a loved on are (or think you may be) affected by multiple personality disorder, this would be a good resource to understand what you are dealing with. It is a must-read manual for any pastor or Christian mental health professional. Although parts of it may be unsettling to read, it is encouraging to hear the success stories and know that recovery is available in Christ.
