Review # 1 was written on 2016-09-16 00:00:00 James Maxey In this scholarly work Laura Skandera-Trombley presents familiar as well as previously unpublished material and offers the reader her interpretations (often differing from those of other Twain scholars, biographers and critics) of the influence of women on Mark Twain's writing and personal life. Most of the material obviously concerns his wife Livy but it also explores Twain's relationship with his mother, Jane Lampton, daughters Susy, Clara and Jean, sister-in-law Susan Crane, secretary Isabel Lyon and a number of female writers and women active in the temperance and suffragette movements. I enjoyed the book for getting an ever clearer picture of Samuel Clemens/Mark Twain. However, though I realize that these chapters are important to show the liberal and progressive environment Livy grew up and participated in, I feel that too much space is given over to the Elmira Water Cure and the above-mentioned female activists. Also, I would have preferred more photographs of Olivia in her later years (which might be indicative of her personality) instead of those of Isabella Beecher Hooker, Anna Elizabeth Dickinson, Julia Beecher and her sketch, The Water Cure Poster, etc.

Review # 2 was written on 2012-11-25 00:00:00 Betarice Sutton This is geared more towards people that work in the area of psychiatry but I wanted to read the sections of the book around the mind and pain but as I can't just read part of the book I read the whole thing. A lot of the content was too complicated for me however.
