I am breaking my personal rule of not rating textbooks used in class with this one; however, it has been such a giant time-suck, it seemed only best to include it towards my yearly book goal. So far, Inupiaq grammar has been one of the most challenging courses I have ever taken. Dr. MacLean is teaching it distance via teleconference. It is difficult to point out the problems with a non-fiction instructional book to the author, especially when you are in the process of taking the class and you expect to earn a passing mark. I am currently done with chapters 1-4, and I have done ALL of the exercises. (If you are familiar with this book then you know all about the 10 pages of handwritten homework per chapter. Good times!) I will admit that I am learning the grammar and have a much stronger understanding of the language. Prior to my taking grammar, I completed 2 semesters of conversational Inupiaq. My current conversational instructor is also helping with the grammar. I look forward to being able to mark this book "read" and to move on to North Slope Inupiaq Grammar: 2nd Year - which is still in the works, but just might be available for next semester. Update: Grammar class is done and the book is read. This would be a good tool to help learn the language, but talking with a fluent speaker would be a better option.
